Depending on if you’re working on your own project or not, the control of who chooses the emotional feeling of the sound design is up to the producer or director of the project. With what I’ve worked with so far, (“My Dogs Leg” directed by Ashton Polak), I knew I had to take a back seat in the direction of the sound design. This is the case with the industry of sound editing and mixing from what I have gathered from talking with Marlena Grezowitz and Isaac Derfel, the sound editor supervisor and the main mixer for the CBS show, Blue Bloods. Knowing how to satisfy and listen to the director is very important for a sound designer and I’m ready and excited for that (I’m a people pleaser, which is great in this case). I enjoy making other people satisfied and happy, and having a good relationship with your director or clients is crucial for the desired outcome. For example, if the director wants realism but not hyper realism, one wouldn’t go as extreme with the equalization of certain sound effects and keep the mix not as over the top. The client or director is always the top priority for an audio engineer. If they’re are happy and satisfied with your work the opinion of the audio engineer doesn’t matter.

Having experience in multiple different Digital Audio Workstations (DAW’s) and being teck savvy helps with the multimedia experience of sound. For instance, knowing how to mix audio for music production, while also having experience as an ADR mixer, sound editor, dialouge editor, and sound designer is equally as important to show the versatility of an audio engineer. I hope that my versatility will show in my path into the industry.
